Brush Cutters At the top-end of the string trimmer line there exists a tool worthy of putting in the Terminator's (Arnold Schwarzenegger) hands. The Brush Cutter is designed for heavy-duty brush clearing with an extra-large motor and an aggressive cutting blade. Some models appear to have something kin to a motorcycle engine for power, a 2' to 3' shaft, an almost frightening 10' to 12' cutting blade and a harness to strap it on. If you want to 'terminate' acres of scrub brush and up-to 4' diameter trees, this may be your tool.
Before buying, make sure the balance and fit is comfortable to you.

I was given an EG5000 with a small crack in the block, Still turns over fine. The crack appears to be in the area where the counter-balance shaft sits.
I'm afraid I may need a short block and am not sure Honda will sell one. But am looking for the service manual if anyone has an unused copy I could buy/get pictures of certain images and some specs out of. I've verified the alternator end is good.
Genset VIN: EA7-4153383 Engine: GX340 S/N; GC Let me know if you would like pictures! Thanks again. I'm afraid I may need a short block and am not sure Honda will sell one.
But am looking for the service manual Honda doesn't provide free digital shop manuals, but does sell paper copies. Any digital copy you might find online is pirated and probably won't have all the updated pages and supplements anyway. Genuine paper copies are on Honda's eBay store, free shipping, free updates for 3 years; here's the link for your EG5000X: Also, you're right about the short block; not available for that model.
Nearly all the engine parts are still in-stock. Is a big online dealer with good Honda parts catalogs, and your local Honda dealer is likely pretty competitive with prices, even with the tradeoff between shipping and local sales taxes; here's a link to find a dealer near you: -Robert@Honda Caveat: I work for Honda, but the preceding is my opinion alone. Thanks for responding. I should have updated sooner. I happened to find the shop manual for the EG and EM series units at work.
(I'm a generator tech.) The crank case and cylinder casting appears the same for all GX340 engines aside from electric start or pull start only. The crank case cover is the very unique part. Fortunately that part is still good. I found a donor engine on craigslist for $25. All I should need now is a gasket set and a con rod.

Maybe a piston and rings. Anyone have experience with aftermarket gasket sets for small Honda engines? Update: After tear-down found the con-rod bearing had lost lubrication for whatever reason, started to leave aluminum on the crankshaft bearing, then due to heat stress the rod let go and punched the crankcase wall. The cylinder bore and rest of the engine components appear in good condition. I ordered a rebuild kit incl. Con-rod and piston to repair the engine.
I'm using muriatic acid to gently remove the aluminum from the crankshaft surface followed by polishing the surface and measuring the shaft. Hopefully I'll have this old Honda up and running shortly. I use this site to check Honda engine parts vs the clone parts. I sometimes use the Honda parts on clone engines, but not vice/versa. (clone parts are weaker) and I have not looked at gasket sets, but I've used clone head gaskets on Hondas with good results and vise versa.

I do not use the thin metal OEM head gaskets on either engine when replacing, I use the thicker composition type gasket with good results. To see clone parts scroll down on the Home page and pick the Import Parts Hp engine that most closely matches yours Hp to see gaskets, etc. They also have good tech service for parts interchange questions, but are kinda slow answering until you get them replying to your first question, then they answer promptly after they get started responding.
